Our First Guests

Last weekend we had our first guests visit us since moving to Rapid City.  Michael, Brent, and Ryan left Boise after work on a Wednesday and drove all night to arrive in Rapid around 9:30am Thursday morning.  They spent the next several days hunting prairie dogs with Rick.  On the last day, we showed them Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.  It was so nice to seem them.  We have missed our friends so much!

Exploring the Black Hills

Springtime in the Black Hills has been just gorgeous, and we have spent many weekends exploring.  Our first outing was to Devil's Tower.  Quite an amazing piece of the Earth.

We made our first of many trips to Custer State Park.  We are so fortunate to have such an amazing place within less than one hour's drive from our home.  This visit we saw some bison and hiked along the Centennial Trail and French Creek.

We climbed to the top of Bear Butte, near Sturgis.

On Mother's Day, we went back to Custer State Park for brunch at the Game Lodge and then hiked the Lover's Leap trail.

Retired Rick, when not occupied with projects around the house, has found the fishing in the Black Hills to be, well, phenomenal.

11555 High Valley Drive

On March 16th, 2012, we took possession of our new home:

11555 High Valley Drive
Rapid City, SD 57702

The commute to town takes about 15-20 minutes and is well worth it.  We live in a little basin surrounded by hills and pine trees.  White tail, mulies, and turkey frequent our yard, and it is oh so peaceful here.  We absolutely love it.

Moving to Rapid

We moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, in two stages.  Stage One happened at the end of January, 2012.  We packed some furniture for Sarah and as many boxes as we could fit into the 28' trailer.  We could not have done it without a lot of help from our friends.

Sarah lived in a duplex on the south side of Rapid for two months while Rick stayed in Boise to finish up his 33-year career at Hewlett-Packard, work on selling our home on Hickory Loop, and pack, pack, pack for moving Stage Two.  His biggest accomplishment was fitting all his mounts safely into our box trailor.

Meanwhile, Sarah explored Rapid City and had visits from Rick in February and Mom in March.  During Rick's visit, we visited the Badlands and saw some big horn sheep.

At the end of March, Sarah flew back to Boise on a Friday, we had dinner with our most wonderful friends - Lisea and Dan, and we set off Saturday morning, together, for the final drive to Rapid City.  Goodbye to Boise, beautiful majestic Idaho, and all of our so very good friends.  We will miss you all so much.

The Rest of 2011

Seems like life slowed down a bit in the Fall of 2011.

September

Sarah attended the national conference for the Financial Planning Association in San Diego.

We took a trip to Kansas to visit Mom and Susie, Grandma, and Uncle Jim

October

Rick and Dan took a motorcycle trip through the Magruder Corridor into Montana.

We scouted around Orofino for Rick's white tail.

December

Remember that FPA conference I attended in San Diego in September?  Well that's when it all started...when I met Caleb.  Caleb recruits for financial planning firms all around the country.  Turns out, real financial planning jobs really do exist, if one is willing to move away from Boise.  Caleb was recruiting for a position with Rick Kahler in Rapid City, South Dakota.  South Dakota?  NO WAY, we thought.  But after some research into the position and Rapid City, we realized what a great opportunity this was.  Just before Christmas, we flew to Rapid for the interview and did a little sightseeing in the Black Hills as well.

After five days in Rapid, we flew on to Kansas for Christmas.
